A holdout was out of the question, but could Malcolm Jenkins actually play through his current deal with the Philadelphia Eagles?

The Philadelphia Eagles have been the talk of the NFL lately, and mostly for good reasons. After a stellar offseason put together by the Birds front office, the Eagles are recognized as one of the most talented teams in the NFL. Therefore, they got the national media talking about them everyday. Not all is perfect in Philadelphia, though.

For the last couple of months, the Eagles front office has had to deal with what they thought was going to be a standoff with veteran safety, Malcolm Jenkins. As the long-time veteran skipped out on OTAs this year, the team and the media grew slightly concerned. Granted, OTAs are voluntary sessions — but it was unlike Jenkins to not show up. For a while, it sounded like he was going to miss the mandatory portion as well, but to our surprise, Jenkins was in attendance.

Looking at his current deal, it’s quite clear that Jenkins has outplayed his contract. As the safety market grows, and young guys at the position are getting generous extensions, Jenkins could feel a bit undervalued. So what do players do when they typically feel underpaid and want a new deal? They hold out. Jenkins will not partake in any holdouts though.

On Wednesday, the Eagles required their players to check-in at the Nova Care Complex on the eve of training camp. As expected, Malcolm Jenkins was in attendance. Although he has expressed interest in getting a new deal at some point, the acting captain does not want to create a distraction within the locker room. After all, Jenkins wants to keep the Eagles focused on getting back to the Super Bowl. How long will Jenkins go until he doesn’t get a new deal, though?

Could a holdout ensue over time?

Sometimes, players will show up with no intentions of holding out, assuming the front office will take care of them eventually. If they don’t over time, then they might begin holding out from training camp halfway through the summer. Knowing the type of leader Jenkins is, that doesn’t really seem like his style. However, will he grow disgruntled if a new deal doesn’t get done soon?

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, that will not be the case. On Wednesday, Schefter joined the morning team over at 97.5 The Fanatic to issue an update on the situation. “He’ll play through this contract,” Schefter explained. “And at some point, they’ll address that at the appropriate time, but it’s not going to be this year.”

Jenkins’ current deal has him signed on for this season, and the next. He’s set to make over $8 million in 2019 and over $7 million in 2020. After seeing another safety exceed Landon Collins’ big payday over in Tennessee, Jenkins could be feeling a bit underpaid yet again. However, by the sounds of it, he won’t create any issues over his contract. Not this year, at least.
