Recent news of Dallas Goedert’s injury opens a door for either Joshua Perkins or Will Tye to make a huge push for a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles’ final 53-man roster.

On Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles released an injury report that had seven new names that we hadn’t seen the last time we all saw one. Some were more notable than others. One of the things that we all saw was two of the three tight ends that we thought would easily make the roster won’t be seen for the foreseeable future, Dallas Goedert and Richard Rodgers. That shifts much of the attention to Joshua Perkins and Will Tye.

Such is life in the NFL for a player or for the fans who cheer these guys on.

We were told that Rodgers was ‘day to day’ quite some time ago. Actually, it’s been a week, and as days go by, we’ve seen Perkins benefit from Rodgers’ absence.

Injury or none, we know Dallas Goedert isn’t going anywhere. He’s listed as ‘week-to-week’ and like Philly’s Lane Johnson, the hope is he’ll be back for Week 1 of the regular season. The Eagles clearly aren’t going to risk an injury to Zach Ertz. We don’t expect to see a ton from him until September.

You’ve probably been hearing the term ’12 personnel’ a lot. What that simply means is the offensive formation consists of a running back, two wide receivers, and two tight ends. We expect to see a lot of that on game days, but for now, if Philly wants to utilize that look in the preseason, much of the responsibility will fall on Tye and Perkins.

Perkins snagged one reception for 11 yards in Philly’s first preseason game. Tye didn’t register a catch, but that figures to change before the end of the preseason. The other tight end on Philly’s roster is Alex Ellis. He’s a longshot to make the roster or the practice squad.

It’s a great opportunity for two guys who are competing for one spot, the third tight end on the depth chart. Philly figures to carry three on their final 53-man roster, and though we used to believe that Rodgers had that spot locked up, that’s no longer a sure bet.

Remember when people used to say ‘you can’t lose your position because of an injury? That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, does it?
