There’s no way the Philadelphia Eagles don’t make a few calls now after what they saw with Cody Kessler. Here are five possible candidates if he’s out for a while.
Well, it is the preseason. After an amazing week in his debut, rookie Philadelphia Eagles tackle Andre Dillard made a mistake. There’s no way of telling what his assignment was or what he was doing. All we know is a pass rusher was turned loose, and Cody Kessler was smacked from behind. he wouldn’t return.
At that point, it was clear. Eagles fans were going to be treated to four quarters of rookie signal-caller Clayton Thorson. The rookie wouldn’t disappoint, but everyone’s clear on something now. Philly better make a few calls to inquire about a few quarterbacks. Otherwise, they may have only one to field in their third preseason game, outside of Carson Wentz.
Everyone should be certain by now that the wise thing to do is to hold him out until the regular season. Both Kessler and Nate Sudfeld have been injured now. Here are five obvious options to give them another quarterback to look at during the preseason.
No, one of them won’t be Sam Bradford.
1. Brock Osweiler
Brock Osweiler has spent part of the last two seasons being a backup for both the Denver Broncos (his second stint there) and the Miami Dolphins. He has a career completion percentage of just under sixty percent, and after 1,165 pass attempts and 7,418 passing yards, we know he’s experienced. It would be nice to see what Doug Pederson can do with him.
2. Mark Sanchez
Don’t take this one lightly. Mark Sanchez had some success in Philly, and with the Eagles’ current roster, they could lure him out of retirement.
3. Josh McCown
The Eagles would be the 11th NFL team to sign Josh McCown since he entered the league in 2002. That’s if they were interested in doing so. He’s had some success, albeit in very short bursts.
He’s posted a career passer rating of just under 80 while completing 1,581 of 2,627 pass attempts for 17,707 yards, and he’s tossed 98 touchdowns against 82 interceptions.
4. Matt Cassel
Matt Cassel just turned 37 in May, but he still hasn’t retired. He’s thrown for 17,508 yards in his career with 104 touchdowns, and he’s even reached the end zone five times as a runner. He was most recently on the Detroit Lions roster in 2018.
5. Colin Kaepernick
Yes, this is still a possibility. It hurts nothing to give Colin Kaepernick a call or a workout, and to be honest, he’s the most talented quarterback on this list. Don’t be surprised if the rumors start circulating.
