Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Cody Kessler’s injury is unclear — but he’s being evaluated for a concussion.

Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles could’ve easily gone into a panic. As they allowed their backup quarterback, Nate Sudfeld take the field for almost the entire first half; the fourth-year passer would go down with a wrist injury. It turns out, he broke it and needed surgery.

That called for Cody Kessler to move into the second-string spot, while rookie fifth-rounder Clayton Thorson became third-string once again. While there were rumors of the Eagles potentially inking a new quarterback, Doug Pederson and the front office didn’t think it would be necessary considering Sudfeld’s timetable.

Well, they might have to seriously consider bringing somebody in now as Kessler becomes the next backup quarterback to go down with an injury for the Eagles. On Thursday, Kessler received the start as Carson Wentz was inactive once again. Unfortunately, Kessler’s time to shine would be cut short almost immediately as he left with an apparent head injury.

Kessler forced to leave the field

After what looked like a blown assignment by Eagles rookie left tackle Andre Dillard, Kessler took a tough shot from his blindside while releasing the ball. It was clear at the time Kessler was feeling the big hit as he was slow to get up, but he did line up to run the next play shortly after.

As the ball would get snapped though, the referees called the play dead for an injury timeout. As somebody in the booth flagged Kessler for a potential head injury, the Eagles backup was forced to come off of the field and head into the medical tent. Moments later, Kessler was off to the locker room leaving Clayton Thorson at quarterback for the remainder of the game.

So far, there’s no word on Kessler’s injury. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, it is assumed he might have a concussion. Further test results will reveal what the diagnosis is and just how much time he might miss — but right now the Eagles are left with no choice but to play with the rookie, Thorson until next week.
