3 Thoughts on new Philadelphia Eagles OL Brett Toth
3. What’s been said about Toth to this point?
Toth fulfilled his first year of service and was a second lieutenant who had graduated as a nuclear engineer in May 2018. He’s literally a rocket scientist.
We know he’s smart, but he’s pretty capable on the football field as well. He anchored the Army Black Knights’ offensive line and helped spearhead the best rushing attack in the nation a season ago.
Here’s what was said by Lance Zierlein in his draft profile at the end of 2018’s season.
"Toth’s physicality and ability as a move blocker will appeal to zone-heavy rushing attacks, but it will take some time to adjust to a run scheme where he isn’t constantly playing so far forward like he was at Army. Toth is an athletic guard/tackle prospect who will likely need a redshirt season to add mass and work on his fundamentals in pass protection."
An unnamed NFL scout put it this way.
"I love this potential. Coaches see guys like this as moldable clay who they can build from the ground up because he’s disciplined, coachable and athletic. He’s the type of player that (Bill) Belichick goes after."
Credit NFL.com for that one as well. That’s some pretty high praise. Depending on where you look, Toth was seen as a possible candidate to go anywhere between the fifth and seventh round in the most recent NFL Draft, with some stating he could crack someone’s lineup as a backup. This could be a steal for Philly.
He hasn’t made the team yet, but again if he wasn’t a serious candidate, why would they bring him in now? This one’s a surprise, but it’s Howie Roseman and the Eagles guys. Why would you expect anything less? We’ll all have to wait and see what happens with this one and what comes afterward.
