5. Dick Vermeil (1976-1982)

Dick Vermeil had his greatest success as a head coach after his time with the Eagles when he went to the St. Louis Rams and won a Super Bowl with one of the greatest collections of talent in football history. However, Vermeil had solid success in Philadelphia as well. After Shaw retired, the Eagles were a dumpster fire of an organization. That was until Vermeil agreed to become the head coach.

In 1978, Vermeil brought the Eagles to the playoffs for the first time since their NFL Championship. He led the Eagles past the Dallas Cowboys in the 1981 NFC Championship game, before losing to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV, 27-10.

During his time in Philadelphia, Vermeil was named UPI NFC Coach of the Year in 1978 and NFL Coach of the Year in 1979 by both Pro Football Weekly and Sporting News and is a member of the Eagles Hall of Fame.

More so than anything, Vermeil brought in Vince Papale to try out for the Eagles, and although Papale did not make a massive impact on the team, his story eventually led to the filming of Invincible, one of the all-time great sports movies that have graced the silver screen, so, for that Coach Vermeil, we thank you.
