One day, we’re going to hear a discussion about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz that doesn’t involve whether or not he’s durable enough to stay on the field for 16 games.

Okay, we get it. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has never appeared in a playoff game. If you listen to some NFL experts, they’ll have you believe that durability is a skill set, and while many of us can understand what they mean by that, it’s hard to imagine anyone else taking the hit ’11’ took in Week 14 of 2017’s regular season that knocked him out of commission without them also having some effects.

The man tore his ACL and MCL and was back by the third week of the 2018 season. That doesn’t count for something?

What gets lost in the talk about whether or not Wentz will ever lead Philly to another Super Bowl is his accomplishments. At 26, there are many.

He owns the team record for completions in a season with 379. He did that as a rookie. In 2017, he was on a collision course with the NFL’s MVP trophy, and on his final pass of the season, one that came three plays after the knee injury, he threw his 33rd touchdown pass of the season. That’s also a team record.

Oh, and he played 11 games in 2018 with a broken back. Are we still going to question his toughness? No one talks about a Drew Brees injury that was potentially career-ending injury anymore. No one talks about Tom Brady going down in 2008, and there are Eagles fans that have no recollection of the fact their beloved Nick Foles missed time as well.

On the day of the Eagles’ third preseason game of 2019, ESPN’s First Take examined the argument of whether or not Wentz or the Baltimore RavensLamar Jackson is the most valuable quarterback on their team.

Here’s the discussion.

There’s a point in all of that. Wentz is necessary for a Super Bowl run in Philly. Jackson is necessary for the Ravens to be relevant. Their teams will play each other in the third week of the preseason. Jackson will probably see some time. Wentz will probably sit out.

Ladies and gentlemen, there’s no way of knowing which of these signal-callers would have provided more value for their teams until the end of the season, but here’s what we can say about the guy in Philly. His team isn’t going to seal the deal without him.

Every time Wentz is tackled, Eagles fans will hold their breath. We’re going to have to hear about his injury history until he completes a full season on the field, and now, without Foles, this team is in trouble if he goes down. The belief is he won’t, and now with, possibly, Philly’s most loaded roster ever, we’ll see how good he can be. Is there a Super Bowl and an MVP season coming? We’ll have to wait and learn together.
