The Philadelphia Eagles add journeyman linebacker Hayes Pullard and waive Asantay Brown, but what does this move mean.

As the  Philadelphia Eagles 2019 regular season looms, the front office still does not seem content with the depth of certain positions on the team. they proved that by making another roster move on Tuesday, August 27th by adding veteran journeyman linebacker Hayes Pullard.

The team waved fellow linebacker Asantay Brown in a corresponding move. This, by no means, is a meteoric shift, but it does add to a necessary area.

The Eagles come into the 2019 campaign with few holes, but the ones that are apparent are now being tended to as the regular-season opener against the Washington Redskins nears. Adding Pullard gives Philly a veteran presence, while still leaving room for another big-time move, notably a possible trade for Jadeveon Clowney.

Trading for Pullard is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Eagles as he has 46 games of NFL experience under his belt after being drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft but was never was a member of the 53-man roster. He then went on to spend time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals before being claimed by the Eagles.

The linebacker position, especially in the middle, is thin for this Eagles defense. After Nigel Bradham, it gets cloudy, especially towards the bottom of the depth chart. There’s a battle between second-year man Chris Worley, Alex Singleton and undrafted rookie T.J. Edwards seemingly for a roster spot or a spot on the practice squad for Edwards or Singleton.

With the addition of Pullard, it adds some depth and competition, but also likely means that one or more of the three aforementioned prospects won’t make the 53-man roster. More importantly, it adds a possible trade piece should Clowney sign his franchise tender and become a more realistic trade piece.

The reason for the move was simple. Philly adds experience and competition without limiting their ability to make other moves. The Eagles swapped inexperience for experience while gaining another body should injuries occur. This is another positive move by the front office as opening weekend inches closer.
