Philadelphia Eagles finished with Josh Adams experiment
After spending two offseasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, undrafted running back Josh Adams will hit the waiver wire.
The road to get to the NFL has been all but easy for former Notre Dame running back, Josh Adams. Back when he was with the Fighting Irish, Adams was a star in the backfield. Early on during his final season, Adams was doing well enough to get some Heisman looks. Unfortunately, his injury concerns put him in an uphill battle while he attempted to advance in his career.
Last spring, Adams decided to take a gamble and enter the NFL Draft. Seven rounds went by, and he didn’t receive a single call. It was shocking, but it wouldn’t be long before Adams picked up the phone to find out that he had an offer from his hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
As a team that wasn’t shy about using undrafted free agents if needed (see Corey Clement), the Eagles were the perfect landing spot for Adams. He battled for a roster spot with a strong preseason effort in 2018, but the Eagles backfield looked too crowded to keep him on board.
Therefore, the Eagles waived Adams until eventually signing him to the practice squad. Ultimately though, so many injuries in the backfield forced the Eagles to call Adams up to the main roster. And the next thing you know, Doug Pederson was ready to utilize Adams as somewhat of a feature back — but that label wouldn’t last long when Darren Sproles returned.
In 2018, Adams led the Eagles in rushing yards with 511 yards, and three touchdowns. It proved that desperate times call for desperate measures. While Adams’ short-lived stint as a first-string running back was appreciated, it was very clear the Eagles did not see much of a future with him.
This year, the Eagles kept Adams around in a crowded backfield during the offseason. Assuming they would keep four or five running backs, it was unclear if Adams was going to make the cut or not. But knowing he is considered to be slightly less versatile than the other guys on board, it was surely a longshot that Adams was going to be able to stick around.
As it turns out, that’s the truth. During final cuts on Saturday, the Eagles have waived Josh Adams just one season after he led the Eagles in rushing. Another team will have the opportunity to claim Adams if they see a fit. Rumors indicate there’s a chance that Joe Douglas could have interest out in New York — or perhaps another running back-needy team will take a chance on him.
