As 32 NFL teams work to slim their rosters to the league-mandated 53 players, here’s an interesting proposition. Might the Philadelphia Eagles bring Orlando Scandrick back?

It’s hard to imagine what’s going on in the minds of the Orlando Scandrick and the 24 other players that the Philadelphia Eagles released on August 30th. As of 9 AM EST on August 31st, the NFL‘s deadline for teams to trim their roster to the league-mandated 53 players, much of the conversation surrounds the 25 players Philly’s already released and who the final 12 subtractions will be.

Every Eagles fan is concerned with about three things. Does that family have any plans? Which college football games will I watch? Who’s going to make this team? Though much of the roster is set, there are still some interesting prospects. Is Clayton Thorson in or out? Does T.J. Edwards get in?

At times, fans forget that these guys are real people who have to plan their lives. In today’s economic climate, anyone can sympathize with someone losing their jobs. Sure, some of them could have seen this coming, but guys like Scandrick could have been seen as one the guys who could have made the roster.

For now, he’s out, but there’s a theory that he could return. National Insider for NFL Network and NFL.com and host of RapSheet and Friends podcast Ian Rapoport is among several of the experts who think he could return Week 2. Take a look.

Here’s why that makes sense. We know that there are injury concerns with Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, and Cre’Von LeBlanc. Cutting Scandrick now could mean that we could be confident in believing Darby may be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but that isn’t a guarantee.

Also, here’s something else. LeBlanc could be added to the team’s IR (injured reserve). That means he wouldn’t count against Philly’s roster for the first seven weeks, and Philly could activate him by Week 8 if he’s ready. Also, if the Eagles brought Scandrick back in Week 2, they don’t have to guarantee his salary for the entire 2019 season.

Then, as far as Mills is concerned, Philly can take their time with him and activate him from the PUP (physically unable to perform) list by Week 7. Scandrick would become a liability again if Mills and LeBlanc return midseason, which explains why Philly wouldn’t want to guarantee a full year’s salary.

Of course, there’s also the possibility of trades or Philly searching the waiver wire, but for now, keep this one in the back of your mind. Don’t be surprised, as Rapoport has mentioned, if you see Scandrick back on the field in an Eagles jersey.
