Two former Eagles, LeSean McCoy, and Andy Reid will reunite with the Kansas City Chiefs this season.
On Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles fan base had a hard time knowing that their franchise leading rusher was back on the market and they couldn’t do anything about it. Ever since the one they call Chip Kelly, traded away McCoy, Eagles fans have had a hard time getting over it.
If there were two moves in the last decade that Eagles fans could not let go — it would be cutting DeSean Jackson and trading LeSean McCoy. Well, this year, the Eagles got one back. And as of Saturday, they had an opportunity to snag the other. Unfortunately, they didn’t need to.
With Miles Sanders, Jordan Howard, Corey Clement, and Darren Sproles all fitting for a role in the backfield this year, a fifth running back isn’t necessary — especially one as versatile as LeSean McCoy. While the reunion would’ve been great, it’s hard to believe a guy like McCoy would take somewhat of a backseat to the youngsters.
There were rumors that the Eagles were interested in potentially giving McCoy a look, but the reality of that happening seemed slim. Logical Eagles fans understood a reunion didn’t make sense — but there was sentimental value to that happening. However, many can be happy knowing that McCoy will reunite with his original Eagles head coach though, Andy Reid.
McCoy becomes a chief
Back in 2009, Andy Reid was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. That’s when they selected Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy in the second round of the draft. Soon, Philadelphia would get introduced to the running back they call ‘Shady,’ and it didn’t take long for the city to fall in love with Brian Westbook’s eventual replacement.
McCoy had quite the successful stint with the Eagles before Chip Kelly dealt him away to the Buffalo Bills. McCoy remained hot in Buffalo for his first couple of seasons, but injuries began to catch up to him. At this point, the Bills realized his production wasn’t matching his contract value. Therefore, they made him a cap casualty this past Saturday.
Now, McCoy will get the opportunity to reunite with the coach that initially believed in him and helped get him an excellent start to his career in Philadelphia. It’s not an Eagles reunion exactly for Philly fans, but at least McCoy landing in Kansas City is the next best thing.
