Philadelphia Eagles: 8 Shocking releases during final cuts
1. Greg Ward, WR
Greg Ward is no stranger to getting left out during final cuts. The Houston quarterback-turned-wideout stood out in the Eagles offseason programs two years ago and has remained on their radar ever since. Unfortunately, Ward still has yet to make the Eagles final roster.
Everything went right for Ward when he got an opportunity to play in the new league, the AAF. But as we know, it folded just before they were able to participate in the playoffs. Ward then went from being a standout to a hopeful once again for the Eagles, and his dream still hasn’t come true.
Although Ward outperformed other wideouts (Mack Hollins) in the preseason, it seems the Eagles don’t really view him as a reliable option for their special teams unit. Hollins, on the other hand, thrives in a role on special teams, leaving him as the lucky one.
2. Brett Toth, OT
Former Army offensive tackle Brett Toth joined the Eagles halfway through the month of August. Since he was part of the military, it became a process to get Toth out of his current situation and onto the Eagles offseason roster. Somehow, they made it happen, though.
This entire situation was strange because the Eagles not only got Toth out of his position with the Army, but they also signed him to a multi-year deal. It seemed like at that point Toth was a lock to make it, but that wasn’t the case. He was waived on Saturday. The good news is that it doesn’t signal the end for Toth, as he will most likely make it back to the practice squad.
