Philadelphia Eagles will give Josh McCown Fridays off
The Philadelphia Eagles will be giving Josh McCown Fridays off during the 2019 season.
Here’s an interesting story if you missed it. We all knew Josh McCown had a sweet deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Josh McCown knows that too. That’s exactly what got him off of the couch to sign a deal with what will be the 11th team he’s played for in the first place, and that’s actually 12 professional franchises that he’s played for if you count a stint he had in the UFL with something called the Hartford Cardinals.
McCown’s decision to unretire will earn him $2 million in 2019 and a possible Super Bowl ring that’s managed to elude him despite playing pro football for 11 teams during the course of a 16-year NFL career. Here’s one of the sweetest parts of the whole thing. He’s also off on Fridays.
Why? The Eagles are allowing him to use that time to honor his commitment to coach high school football in Charlotte, North Carolina at Myers Park High School. Mike Florio, the creator of Profootballtalk.com, spoke on the subject with former NFL quarterback Chris Simms.
Take a look.

Two things stand out about this. As Simms and Florio mentioned, Fridays are generally the time that backups get some work. Then again, McCown’s been around forever. You saw the game against the Baltimore Ravens, didn’t you? McCown is 40 years old, and there’s not a whole lot left that you can teach him at this point.
Sure, there was some rust early, but once he knocked that off and got going, Philly’s offense looked the best it had looked all preseason.
He’s ready to play and should be good if anything happens to Carson Wentz. He also provides a veteran voice in the Eagles’ quarterback room too. That will also benefit ’11’ in 2019. Some will point to McCown’s career record of 23-53 as a starter and say that creates red flags. You also have to look at the teams he’s played on. This is the best team he’s been a part of and the best coaching staff he’s had.
McCown was a good pickup for Philly, and fortunately for him and those kids in Charlotte, Philly’s a forward-thinking franchise who knew exactly what it would take to make the deal work. Is anyone else interested in checking this Myers Park team out?
