The Philadelphia Eagles orchestrate a dramatic come-from-behind victory and give team chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie an amazing birthday present.
What does a man do for his birthday when he owns one of the most popular franchises in all of sports and he’s worth a little over $2 billion? It’s simple. He goes to the game. The Philadelphia Eagles held the ball for over 20 minutes in the second half as team owner and CEO Jeffrey Lurie celebrated his 68th birthday in style.
Philly spotted the Washington Redskins a 17-0 lead before exploding and outscoring their long-term rivals by a score of 32 to 10 en route to a 32-27 victory in the friendly confines of Lincoln Financial Field.
We’ve learned quite a few things. The Eagles can win with finesse. DeSean Jackson has quite a bit left in the tank, and when necessary, ‘The Birds’ can grind out some yardage on the ground too.
Let’s talk about some numbers. DeSean Jackson caught eight passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Both of those were over 50 yards. Carson Wentz went 28 for 39, racked up 313 passing yards, and tossed three touchdown passes.
Alshon Jeffery added two trips to the end zone, one receiving and one rushing, as Philly gave Lurie the best present that they could have, a come-from-behind win on opening day.
Perhaps, the most impressive thing was a long drive in the fourth quarter that featured a rushing attack that had been dormant for most of the game. It was that drive that salted this one away.
The ‘Skins would tack on a score late, but this one wasn’t as competitive in the second half as the final score would indicate.
Most importantly, the Eagles can learn a lot from this one without having to put one in the loss column. Happy birthday Mr. Lurie! We hope you enjoyed this one as much as the rest of us did. The Eagles move to 1-0 on the season. Next up is a primetime game versus the Atlanta Falcons who will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing opening-day loss.
