Philadelphia Eagles will likely call Dolphins to inquire about Minkah Fitzpatrick
Miami Dolphins defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick wants to be traded, and the Philadelphia Eagles could have an interest.
So far, the 2019 NFL season is not going so smooth down in Florida. As the Miami Dolphins opened up the season by taking a beating from the Baltimore Ravens, a lot of players have quickly grown disgruntled with their situation there, after just one week of playing.
Now, seeing the Dolphins struggle in week one was far from surprising. At this point, it has become evident that they are acquiring as much draft picks as possible, while hoping they end up with say — the first-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In other words, they are tanking.
While they won’t come outright and say that, everybody knows percisely what’s going on. And that includes the players within the locker room. As players know they have to go out still and compete for 15 more games, many are quickly growing disgruntled knowing that they are putting their bodies on the line for absolutely nothing.
After last week’s discouraging loss, there were a few reports out there speculating that multiple players went to their agent in an attempt to request trades. While those initial reports were denied, one was certainly true, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
Minkah Fitzpatrick wants out of Miami?
Just last year, the Dolphins selected Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick with the 11th overall pick in the draft. This year, Fitzpatrick already wants out on the organization. According to Mortensen’s sources, he has been granted permission from the Dolphins to seek a trade.
Knowing Eagles’ General Manager Howie Roseman, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to think that he will be calling Miami’s front office. As we found out with the recent Jadaveon Clowney situation, the Eagles are going to be willing to call any team for any significant player made available no matter how serious they are.
Are the Eagles in immediate need of a safety? We wouldn’t say that. However, it is necessary to note that Rodney McLeod re-structured his deal with the Eagles in the offseason and is currently playing on the final year of his contract. Also, Malcolm Jenkins turns 32 in December.
This past NFL Draft, the Eagles were expected to select a safety at some point. Some mock drafts projected they would choose one as high as the first round.
Obviously, we know they went through seven rounds without acquiring one. So could Fitzpatrick be somebody they are interested in?
The rumored price tag is a first-round pick, and potentially more. Coming off of an 80 tackle season, with two picks and a touchdown, Fitzpatrick has proven to be a solid defensive back so far.
He would come on a rookie deal, with an additional two years beyond 2019, with a potential fifth-year option attached. The interest for the defensive back will be significant, and the Eagles will most likely be in the mix. If they can get him for a first-rounder, they should make it happen.
