Is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz a top player at his position? PFF seems to think so.
Is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz having a good season? If you were to ask a handful of people, you would probably get a mix of responses. Some may say that Wentz has been disappointing so far as they anticipated an MVP season, similar to his 2017 effort.
Others will say the guy is playing pretty good despite dealing with a short-staffed offense over the last two weeks. The fact of the matter is the Eagles are 1-2 with Wentz at the helm. If you count wins and losses as a quarterback stat, then you may not be pleased right now.
However, if you take other’s mishaps into account, you may realize that Wentz is doing all that he can do and playing good enough to win, but he’s just not getting help from his teammates around him. The experts over at Pro Football Focus seem to believe the latter. After an extensive review of Wentz’s progress over the last three weeks, PFF still sees a Top-3 passer in Wentz.
PFF’s Power Ranking Assesment
After week three’s loss against the Detroit Lions, Wentz left the game with 259 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. His passer rating was 94.6. He wasn’t perfect, but he did more than enough to win the game for the Eagles. Unfortunately, two turnovers, three critical penalties, and seven drops by the wideouts killed many opportunities for the offense.
At this point, Wentz has realistically only played one bad half of football. That rough start came against the Atlanta Falcons where he threw two interceptions. Other than that, there shouldn’t be too much to criticize at this point. Ranked as the third-best quarterback through three weeks, PFF sees an outstanding quarterback who is affected by an underperforming team
"“Wentz has been better than his stats would show, mostly due to four big-time throws falling incomplete. Wentz ranks fifth in the league in big-time throw percentage, and he’s tied for third with a 92.9 grade on throws targeted 10 or more yards downfield.”"
During last week’s game alone, Wentz himself had three highly graded ‘big-time throws’ fall incomplete, according to PFF. The rest of the league’s quarterbacks had three total combined.
And to make matters even worse, Steve Palazzolo pointed out that through three games, all NFL quarterbacks combined had 21 of the NFL’s highest-graded throws fall incomplete — and Carson Wentz accounts for four of them. Meanwhile, not a single quarterback aside from Wentz has more than two under their belt. That says a lot about what’s been going on lately.
