Philadelphia Eagles would be foolish to pursue Odell Beckham Jr

Philadelphia Eagles twitter seems to believe there’s a chance the Eagles could trade for Odell Beckham Jr. That would be a foolish decision.

After sinking into a quick 1-2 hole, the Philadelphia Eagles have righted the ship with back-to-back victories, and they’ve returned some of their most important playmakers. One noteworthy name that has yet to return is the teams’ deep threat, Desean Jackson. The absence of Jackson has noticeably limited the teams’ downfield passing ability, and it’s led some Eagles fans to ponder the merits of pursuing a former NFC East rival via trade.

Odell Beckham Jr‘s short tenure with the Cleveland Browns has been more eventful for what he’s worn on the field than what he’s produced on it. The multiple time all-pro wide receiver has struggled to be a game-breaker in first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens‘ offense, and trade speculations have begun to swirl.  The most notable call to action came from FS1’s Colin Cowherd just yesterday

The idea of addition by subtraction for the Browns is intriguing, but if they opt to pursue a deal for Beckham Jr, the Eagles should stay far away. The primary reason Philly should steer clear of Beckham is apparent. His attitude and flashy persona would not play well in Philadelphia. Beckham is and has been almost a caricature of the stereotypical “Diva” wide receiver during his five-year career in the league so far.

From punching equipment on the sideline to openly weeping when he hasn’t gotten his way, Beckham has proven time and time again that he doesn’t have the character to fit in Philadelphia. He is the type of player that would be roundly booed for his perceived lack of effort, and he would only reinforce that vitriol with his blase, childish attitude.

Putting his personality aside, Beckham is also a scheme breaker on offense. He wants the ball at all times, and that need to feed him produces the tunnel vision effect that’s harmed Baker Mayfield so far this season. ‘OBJ’ has seen no fewer than six targets in every game so far this year, and he’s eclipsed 100 receiving yards only once. That was in Week 2 versus a terrible New York Jets secondary.

The Browns have been outscored 51-16 in their last two losses despite having him on the field. That isn’t good at all.

dark. Next. Rasul Douglas is proving to be the Eagles’ best cornerback

Schematically speaking, Beckham doesn’t fit what the Eagles do best. Philadelphia runs an offense that succeeds when it’s diversity is allowed to shine. Head coach Doug Pederson has one of the league’s best-receiving corps at his disposal, including two top-ten tight ends in Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert. They also have a collection of running backs that can also contribute.

Carson Wentz didn’t have to throw for 300+ yards to defeat the Green Bay Packers or the New York Jets, and there’s no reason to bring in a player that will beg him to do so now.
