5 Ways 2019’s Philadelphia Eagles remind us of 1993’s Houston Oilers
1. For both teams, their last playoff run ended in disappointment.
Here’s a controversial statement. Life hasn’t been too terrible as an Eagles fan. You’ve got 582 wins, 23 wins in the playoffs, three Super Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl win to talk about.
Houston never made it to the Super Bowl, and when they’re brought up, it’s normally for two reasons, Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell and catastrophic losses in the playoffs.
There was some comeback magic by John Elway following the 1991 regular season and a heartbreaking loss at the hands of a Kansas City Chiefs team that featured Joe Montana and Marcus Allen (that’s how the ’93 Oilers season would end), but nothing compares to blowing a 35-3 second-half lead.
The Oilers were on the wrong side of the greatest comeback in NFL history, and they’d have to stew over that one until the 1993 season began. Interestingly enough, the Buffalo Bills were led by former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich on that day.
Philly’s most recent playoff run ended in heartbreak as well. No one will ever forget where they were when Nick Foles‘ pass slipped through Alshon Jeffery‘s hands. Sure, that may not be as dramatic as Houston’s collapse, but try telling an Eagles fan that it didn’t sting just as much.
