November 19th, 1978: Well, this one’s obvious

Every year, November 19th comes and goes, often without any fanfare. That’s unless you and your family celebrate someone’s birthday or there’s some special event you celebrate on your own.

It isn’t a major holiday. People are normally getting their Thanksgiving day plans together, but November 19th is actually one of the most important days in the history of Eagles football because that’s the day that, perhaps, the most famous play in team history occurred.

To this day, only the Good Lord in Heaven, Joe Pisarcik, and the Giants offense and coaches know what New York was thinking. Rather than come out in the victory formation, take a knee, and assure themselves of certain victory, the Giants attempted a handoff. Pisarcik and Larry Csonka weren’t on the same page. The ball was fumbled, and Herm Edwards went into the ‘scoop and score’ mode.

During the television broadcast, the credits were already rolling, but Philly kept playing. The win helped earn the Eagles earn a Wildcard playoff berth and arguably, set the wheels in motion for a team that would eventually beat the Dallas Cowboys in Philadelphia’s first NFC Championship Game at Veterans Stadium, a game that sent ‘The Birds’ to their first Super Bowl appearance.
