Could Philadelphia Eagles actually sign another running back?

As hard as this is to type or believe, you do realize the Philadelphia Eagles signing another running back is a very real possibility, don’t you?

Well, by now, you should all probably realize why Jay Ajayi was a free agent for so long after he was medically cleared to return to the NFL playing field. He’s officially cooked. He has nothing left, and it isn’t just what we’ve seen the stats. He actually averaged 4.5 yards per carry for the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Miami Dolphins in Week 13, but the eyeball test is what does him in.

He can’t explode through the hole anymore. He doesn’t have the burst to get to the outside. He’s carried the ball eight times for 25 yards since the Eagles brought him back on November 15th, and none of those carries have been strong runs, impressive, or decisive.

As much as it pains us all to say this, it’s the truth. Jay Ajayi has nothing left, but here’s a question. Could Philly actually be in the market for yet another running back? To be honest, it wouldn’t be wise if they weren’t. Unfortunately, there isn’t much else out there. That’s why they re-signed Ajayi in the first place.

Philly moved on from Wendell Smallwood in the offseason. Darren Sproles was brought back right before the regular season. Corey Clement was given another opportunity. Boston Scott was supposed to be the next Darren Sproles. None of that has paid off.

The free agency wire features a lot of LeGarrette BlountAlfred Morris, C.J. Anderson, D’Onta Foreman, and Jeremy Hill. There isn’t much out there, but when Jordan Howard has missed three games with an injury, you have to ask if he needs to be signed long term. When the team seems to be concerned with giving Miles Sanders a ton of carries, there seem to be some issues.

There has to be a plan in place to get this fixed, and there isn’t one. Don’t be surprised if this team parts ways with Jay Ajayi soon. Don’t be surprised if they add yet another running back. The question is who’s worth the acquisition.
