On Monday, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson didn’t seem like he thought changes were coming to the coaching staff. One day later, it appears that’s absolutely the case.

We can argue all day about whether or not Doug Pederson has lost the team. We can argue about whether or not all or most of the Philadelphia Eagles‘ shortcomings should be laid at the head coach’s doorstep. What can’t be argued is the Eagles are never going to win another Super Bowl with the team or its coaching staff being constructed as it currently is.

Expect this team to look much different next season. The question is who stays and who goes?

On one hand, you can argue that it’s ridiculous for Coach Pederson to keep stating that everyone needs to place all of the blame at his doorstep and then state he shouldn’t lose his job if this team does hand out pink slips. On the other, you can argue that he is doing a decent enough job in spite of the circumstances.

Forget the theory that everyone’s blinded by 2017. Look at the job he did in 2018. That may have been one of the better coaching performances that we’ve seen in a while, yet it’s largely overlooked. Pederson took a team ravaged by injuries on another late-season run and came within a few plays of earning a berth in a second-consecutive NFC Championship Game.

Yes, Pederson has lost this team to some extent. That’s obvious, but firing him at this point may be a bit premature. Pederson deserves some blame, but so does Howie Roseman. So does Carson Wentz. Philly’s lost two games and missed out on the opportunity to tie another in the later stages because of dropped passes. DeSean Jackson’s presence would have, at minimum, would have gotten the Eagles two more wins.

That would have them in first place in the NFC East correct?

For now, it appears Pederson is safe, but according to a report by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, changes may be coming unless Philly goes on a playoff run. Here’s the report:

"I haven’t spoken to Jeffrey Lurie, the Eagles owner. He hasn’t replied to a text message either, but I do know his history. Even when Andy Reid was coaching (in) Philadelphia, he would hold people accountable if you are performing below expectations. Right now, the Eagles are performing below expectations. Barring a run in the playoffs, I would say there’s going to be some significant changes on the Philadelphia (coaching) staff. I’m not saying Doug Pederson will get fired, but I think there will be some staff changes, significantly."

There’s only one issue with all of that. This team needs changes in the coaching staff whether they make the playoffs or not. There’s enough evidence to corroborate that. Mike Groh is awful. Carson Wentz has regressed under Press Taylor. The wide receivers are worse under Carson Walch’s watch. Again we can’t support Doug Pederson’s ‘it’s all on me’ stance and then criticizes anyone who gives him the lion share of the blame.

Has he earned the benefit of the doubt? Sure? Can we argue that it’s time to move on? That is also accurate, but Pederson isn’t going anywhere and he shouldn’t. Let’s fix his roster, get him some better assistants, and then, let’s reassess.
