Doug Pederson spot on about Eagles facing must-win situation against Giants
By Dan Parzych
Doug Pederson is right on the money for claiming Monday’s game against the New York Giants is a must-win situation for the Philadelphia Eagles.
With only four games to go before the regular season is officially over, the pressure is on the Philadelphia Eagles, as they look to make a final push for one of the six playoff spots in the NFC, although winning the division continues to be their best bet.
As much as the Eagles want to believe they have a legitimate shot at potentially earning one of the Wild Card spots in the NFC, the fact that Philadelphia currently sits at 5-7, and trails the Minnesota Vikings by three games for the No. 6 seed shows the obstacles they would face.
So unless some sort of miracle happens over the final four weeks in which the Vikings or Los Angeles Rams fail to win another game, it looks like the Eagles will have to settle for the NFC East title if they want to extend their season into January, which is doable.
Thanks to the Dallas Cowboys struggling throughout the 2019 season with their inability to defeat teams with winning records, Philadelphia currently trails their rivals by one game in the NFC East standings, and could be in amazing shape come Week 16 when the two teams square off.
But since the Eagles have work to do before this NFC East showdown takes place in two weeks, the main focus right now at the moment is on Monday’s Week 14 battle with the New York Giants.
A few weeks ago, this game was far from being considered a must-win situation for Philadelphia since Week 16 seemed like it was going to be the most important of all, which is obviously still the case.
However, Doug Pederson was right on the money by telling reporters on Thursday that Monday is a must-win game for the Eagles, because if they suffer another loss like Miami, this team could be in serious trouble.
Depending on how things play out on Thursday night when the Cowboys take on the Chicago Bears, another loss to the Giants would result in either the Eagles being in the same position as they are now, or trailing Dallas by two full games with three to go.
And if Pederson weren’t already facing a ton of extra pressure to help Philadelphia snap their three-game losing streak, just imagine the high level that pressure would hit if that streak happened to extend to four.
So while a meeting against a two-win team in the Giants doesn’t seem like that much of a concern in the days leading up to the contest, if Eagles fans were frustrated over the outcome against the Dolphins, just imagine how the base would react to a loss against New York.
