Wait. We thought the Philadelphia Eagles were the team playing for the playoff spot and that the Jets and Dolphins had nothing to play for?

Though the NFL season is a 17-week grind and each of its teams and players needs to have a little short-term memory, it’s hard for the consumer and the fans of these players and teams to do the same thing. Just look at what’s going on with the Philadelphia Eagles and their fanbase.

It’s been hard to get the thought of that loss to the Miami Dolphins out of the minds of football’s most loyal fans. The Eagles’ heart and desire have been called into question all week long following that loss.

In Week 13, Philly was the team with the playoff aspirations, and they played as though the were more interested in getting a higher pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Miami, who we were told had nothing to play for, performed as though their season was on the line. Then, the Dolphins and their rivals, the New York Jets followed that up with one of the better games of 2019’s regular season.

Both teams gave it their all and played as though their lives depended on it, resulting in one of the better contests we’ve seen all season. The Eagles could learn a lot just by watching that film, but here are two takeaways that come from digesting Miami and New York’s game.

First, both teams played with pride. Second, both coaching staffs showed leadership that most NFL fans have questioned they had. Did you see that Brian Flores blowup at the end of that one? Does it look like he didn’t want to win that one? If only that same fire was shown by the Eagles coaching staff. If only the Eagles fans could see their team play with that same emotion.

That would make the losses easier to take. There’s a difference between laying down and going down swinging.

Next. 5 Bold predictions for the Eagles and Giants. dark

Four games remain in Philly’s season, beginning with the Monday night showdown with the rival New York Giants. The NFC East’s crown remains on the line, along with the emotional and mental health of an entire fanbase. Let’s hope ‘The Birds’ provide a better performance in Week 14 than the did in Week 13. One thing’s certain. They better not show less desire than the Dolphins did for a second-consecutive week.
