Zach Ertz could still set career highs across board for Eagles in 2019
By Dan Parzych
With three games to go in the regular season, the Philadelphia Eagles could still see Zach Ertz set numerous career highs for 2019.
Zach Ertz has always been a key factor on offense for the Philadelphia Eagles throughout his career, but the effective pass-catching tight end could see his heavy workload hit new levels during this final stretch due to all the injuries at wide receiver.
From DeSean Jackson missing most of the year to Alshon Jeffery recently being ruled out for the remainder of the season, it’s tough to describe just how frustrating the wide receiver position has been with the Eagles since the unit just can’t seem to catch a break.
The fact that Philadelphia’s top receivers at the moment appear to be JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Greg Ward make it pretty clear just how desperate the Eagles are for help, but at least the presence of Ertz will always give the team hope.
After coming up big during Monday’s win over the New York Giants by catching nine passes for 91 yards to go along with two touchdowns, including the game-winning score in overtime, Ertz hopes to carry the momentum over into Week 15 when facing the Washington Redskins.
Looking at his history against the Redskins along with the current situation at wide receiver, there’s every reason to believe that Ertz will finish with a strong outing in Washington to put Philadelphia in better position to keep things close with the Dallas Cowboys.
Better yet, since Ertz’s workload is expected to be heavier over these final three games, the Eagles star tight end could finish with career highs in numerous categories in the receiving department.
Despite tying his previous career high of eight touchdowns last season, Ertz did crush previous highs by catching 116 passes for 1,163 yards.
When taking into consideration that Ertz never even crossed more than 100 catches or 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, this shows just how valuable he was during the team’s first season after winning their first Super Bowl title in franchise history.
At the moment, the chances of Ertz setting new career highs in all three categories seems like a long shot since he only has 79 catches for 827 yards with five touchdowns, but it certainly is possible.
The chances of Ertz pulling off this accomplishment would need to result in double-digit catches in all three remaining games for Philadelphia, but since the heavy workload is already expected, why shouldn’t Eagles fans feel confident in seeing this happen?
