The Philadelphia Eagles can’t afford to take a light approach with Dwayne Haskins during Sunday’s meeting with the Washington Redskins.

Unlike the Philadelphia Eagles since their future appears to be set with Carson Wentz, the Washington Redskins entered the 2019 offseason with some questions at the position before eventually using a first-round pick on April to select Dwayne Haskins.

After looking at the impact made in 2018 as the starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Haskins was rightfully considered one of the top quarterbacks in the draft this year, and seemed like the perfect candidate for the Redskins to build their offense around.

Even if Washington had previously acquired Case Keenum in a trade with the Denver Broncos, the Redskins always knew their veteran would only be the short-term answer, and there would be more potential for the future with Haskins.

It took a little longer than originally expected for Washington to throw Haskins into the starting role since the Redskins as a team seemed like they had nothing to lose in 2019, but the rookie has started in each of the last five games.

Despite two of those starts resulting in wins for the Redskins, it’s no secret that Haskins overall numbers have been far from impressive.

Don’t think so? All football fans need to do is look at the five games in which Haskins has started to see how he’s only thrown for more than 200 yards once with just three total touchdown passes to see how far the rookie is from being on the necessary level for Washington.

With that being said, just because Haskins has struggled to put up bigger numbers over his five starts doesn’t mean the Eagles’ defense is going to be in for a favorable matchup.

Sure, Philadelphia will most likely make things complicated for Haskins by applying constant pressure throughout the contest, but also with the way things have been for the Eagles with their cornerback situation at times, this also seems like the perfect trap game.

The last thing Philadelphia can afford to do is allow Haskins to finally display that breakout performance on offense the Redskins have desperately been waiting to see since the team has already faced enough criticism for still being in the NFC East with a 6-7 record.

Down the road, Haskins will most likely become another quarterback that causes all sorts of problems for Philadelphia within the NFC East once Washington builds a better offense around him.

But for now, here’s to hoping the struggles continue with Haskins for at least another week to put the Eagles in the best position possible to earn another win.
