Philadelphia Eagles: Five players selected to Pro Bowl
The NFL announced their annual Pro Bowl rosters Tuesday night for the 2019 season, and it includes five Philadelphia Eagles.
The Pro Bowl has become something of a joke in recent years, but the NFL‘s all-star game remains interesting from the standpoint of voting and who makes the roster. This season, when the voting concluded and the rosters were finalized, five Philadelphia Eagles were selected. The only NFC team with more was the New Orleans Saints, and Philly’s five selections mean they’re tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for having the fourth-most Pro Bowlers from one roster.
The fact that the fans elected five Eagles may be surprising, but the Eagles are talented.
Voting concluded with Brandon Brooks, Jason Kelce, Zach Ertz, Fletcher Cox, and Rick Lovato all being given the nod.
In the case of Brooks, when he suffered a ruptured Achilles in the playoff loss in New Orleans, the team was unsure if he would be able to play at all in 2019. Not only did he play, he excelled. He has yet to give up a sack and is a legitimate NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award candidate, which is unprecedented for an offensive lineman, let alone a right guard. His nod is much deserved.
Kelce is consistently in the discussion for being seen as one of the best centers in the league and has been for a while now. He is certainly one of the most athletic, but he sometimes doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
As far as Zach Ertz goes, if he isn’t the best tight end in the league, he’s certainly in the top three. Ertz’s production is unrivaled. His 116 receptions in 2018 were the most by a tight end, and the second-most in all of the NFL, at any position. In 2019, he already has 84 receptions to his credit.
Fletcher Cox has oftentimes been called the best interior defensive lineman not named Aaron Donald. His constant pressure and ability to control a line of scrimmage from the defensive tackle position makes it easy to see why he gets another Pro Bowl nod.
Long snapper Rick Lovato may be a surprise, playing a position that gets no glory, but he’s been close to perfect all season. He is the only Eagle selected not to have been selected before, and it’s a first-time honor that’s well deserved.
While the Eagles certainly aren’t one of the best teams record-wise, they are among the most talented. That may come off as a surprise to some, but it’s also reassuring. Here’s to hoping none of these players actually have to play due to being in Miami for Super Bowl LIV.
