Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced on Monday that Ronald Darby will miss significant time. Immediately three thoughts come to mind.

No one will ever believe this now but at the time that the Philadelphia Eagles re-signed Ronald Darby to a one-year deal, it wasn’t that bad of an idea. Stop laughing. It wasn’t. Let’s travel back to March and just think about a few things.

No one was going to find Marshon Lattimore or Patrick Peterson in the NFL Draft. Jalen Ramsey wasn’t saying that he wanted to be traded yet, and believe it or not, Darby was seen as the best cornerback in the free agency pool.

Philly, as they always seem to be, had a huge void and hole at corner. All they needed for Darby to be was serviceable. He hasn’t been, and as you know, hindsight is always seen in 20-20 vision. Fast forward back to the present, and following an injury that he suffered in Week 16, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson has announced that Darby will miss significant time.

That’s big news out of Philly. Here are three immediate reactions.

5 Studs, 5 duds from the Eagles Week 16 win over Dallas. light. Related Story

1. Well, that probably means that’s it, right?

Darby is at the end of his current deal. He won’t be re-signed. What does that mean for his legacy? Darby will never be remembered with the same disdain that Eagles fans have for Nnamdi Asomugha, but he was just about as bad.

He’s a guy that made too much money, got beat too often, and never became the guy that Eagles fans hoped he would be.

2. As far as everybody else goes…

We now know Darby’s status. At the time of this story being published, we don’t know anything about anyone else that we didn’t know yesterday. As far as Jalen Mills, Lane Johnson, Jordan Howard, and those guys go, it’s the same old story.

All we’re getting is ‘tests are being run and well let you know’ and so and so is ‘day-to-day’.

3. Who’s the next man up?

According to Coach Pederson, Rasul Douglas will get the start now. That’s concerning. He’s slow, but compared to everything else the Eagles have, he probably has the most talent. We’ll see if that translates to better results than Darby produced, but as it stands, our final memory of him in an Eagles jersey figures to mirror so many of our other memories, one where he’s getting picked on and taken advantage of for a long gain.
