Philadelphia Eagles: Miles Sanders deserves Offensive ROY consideration
By Brian Cass
Following another superb outing against the Dallas Cowboys, Miles Sanders has officially been inserted into the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year conversation.
It may be improbable, but Philadelphia Eagles rookie phenom Miles Sanders deserves to take home some hardware once his excellent rookie season wraps up.
Players like Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and Oakland Raiders running back Josh Jacobs may get more love from the national media when it comes to Offensive Rookie of the Year candidates, but no rookie deserves the award more than Sanders at the moment.
For starters, Sanders is seventh among the NFL all-purpose yardage leaders, trailing the likes of Christian McCaffery, Michael Thomas and Dalvin Cook just to name a few.
After his efforts on Sunday, Sanders also became just the fifth rookie since 2000 with at least 500 yards rushing and receiving, which is beyond impressive to say the least.
Sanders has also already set the franchise rookie record for scrimmage yards, and even broke LeSean McCoy’s team rookie rushing record, showing how the the list accolades goes on and on.
The stats only tell part of the story for Sanders, though. Ever since Jordan Howard went down with an injury in Week 9, Sanders has been the lead bell cow for Doug Pederson’s offense, and he’s played a pivotal role in his team’s current three-game winning streak.
Without Sanders, this team wouldn’t be in a position to win the NFC East right now. For as much credit as Carson Wentz has gotten over the past three weeks, Sanders deserves just as much for his contributions on the ground and in the receiving game.
In three must-win games against divisional opponents, Sanders totaled 397 yards from scrimmage to go along with three trips to the end zone. He’s been a superstar for this offense, which is something they’ve been searching for all season.
At times throughout the 2019 season, it felt like no one on the offense wanted to step up and make plays.
Luckily, Sanders stepped up to the challenge and then some, providing the offense with explosiveness and consistency out of the backfield
For everything he’s done for the Eagles this season, Sanders should walk away with the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, and while there are plenty of other strong candidates that seem just as worthy, the numbers alone speak for itself.
