Philadelphia Eagles stat line: Just how clutch has Carson Wentz been?
Just how clutch has Carson Wentz been for the Philadelphia Eagles? How about we take a look at the numbers for some perspective?
You wouldn’t believe it if you weren’t there to witness it. You wouldn’t believe it if you just looked around the Philadelphia Eagles fan base today, but less than a month ago, everyone who pays any attention to this team was infuriated with them. Not only that, Carson Wentz had become the lightning rod for everyone’s anger. Everything was his fault.
A loss versus what was supposed to be an inferior Miami Dolphins team will do that for you.
Fast forward, and the tide has turned as some might say. Philly’s on a three-game winning streak. Not only that, they’ve disposed of the three teams that their fans hate the most in three consecutive weeks. One more win versus a suddenly hot New York Giants team will put them back in the playoffs for a third consecutive season.
Wentz’s play is a big reason for the turnaround. He’s been excellent. Everyone acknowledges that. Just how important he’s been has been up for debate though. Let’s settle this once and for all. You know what they say. People lie. Numbers don’t.
So, how did Wentz help transform a team that was 5-7 less than a month ago into a red-hot unit that has the chance at winning the division and making the postseason? The answer is simple. It appears that he does indeed have a clutch gene that some wanted to believe that he was lacking. Let’s look at some fourth-quarter and overtime numbers.
1. Completion percentage
Over the course of these last three games, in the fourth quarter, Wentz has completed 34 of 42 passes. That’s an 81 percent completion percentage if you don’t have a calculator handy. Not bad, huh?
2. Touchdown to interception ratio
It doesn’t get much better than 352 yards passing and a four-to-nothing touchdown-to-interception ratio. Add that 81 percent completion percentage that we just mentioned, and we’re talking about a 133.3 passer rating. That’s special.
3. The most important stat of them all
The most important stat of them all is wins versus losses, and as mentioned earlier, over the course of the last three games, Wentz has helped lead his team to a 3-0 record. That includes two come-from-behind fourth-quarter victories and two game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime. Clutch? We think so. It’s nice of you all to finally join us.
