Well, everybody doesn’t have the day off. The Philadelphia Eagles are at practice on New Year’s Day, and that comes after the announcement of four roster changes.

Well, the work week doesn’t stop for an NFL playoff team. On the heels of announcing the addition of a new running back, the Philadelphia Eagles began the new year by announcing a few roster changes.

According to Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, Philly has had their eye on Elijah Holyfield since the most recent draft. They even attended the Georgia Bulldogs Pro day to get a closer look. The coaching staff likes him and is comfortable with going into the postseason with four running backs.

Here are the other roster moves that have been made, along with a reaction for each one.

1. Brandon Brooks officially heads to the injured reserve.

This one shouldn’t surprise anyone. A season worthy of the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award is over. For Brandon Brooks, the goal is now to rehab that separated shoulder.

2. Guess what guys? Shelton Gibson is back!

Well, look who it is. While surprising, the readdition of Shelton Gibson makes sense. He’s a speed guy. The Eagles have invested two seasons into him. He knows the playbook. The downside is, after all of that, he was only able to muster three catches and 59 receiving yards over the course of his brief stint in the NFL.

3. Dieugot Joseph has been signed to the practice squad.

Here’s another move that makes sense. Nate Herbig will get some work at practice this week. Dieugot Joseph adds depth at tackle.

4. Deshaun Davis has been released from the practice squad.

Life in the NFL is much like life in any other workforce sometimes, other than the constant risk of a torn ACL or a head injury. In the case, of Deshaun Davis, however, the guys who join the team later are usually the guys who get shipped out first, and Philly has more pressing needs than at linebacker. You know how this works though. Don’t rule out his readdition later.
