Philadelphia Eagles: Mike McCarthy would be Pat Shurmur 2.0 with Giants
By Dan Parzych
The Philadelphia Eagles shouldn’t be too concerned over the New York Giants reportedly interviewing Mike McCarthy on Friday to replace Pat Shurmur.
As bad as it sounds, Philadelphia Eagles fans weren’t really all that surprised to see the New York Giants decide to move on from Pat Shurmur this week since the former head coach seemed to be holding the team back from their true potential.
And while some Giants fans are feeling excitement over reports that former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy will be interviewing with the team on Friday to potentially fill the position, this possibility shouldn’t be too concerning for the Eagles or their fans.
With all due respect to McCarthy since he did help the Packers claim a Super Bowl title during the 2010 season, but part of the reason behind his firing in Green Bay was due to the belief that he was holding Aaron Rodgers back on offense.
Most head coaches would do anything to have a quarterback like Rodgers to work with since it’s only a matter of time before the Packers star ends up with a spot in Canton.
So to see Green Bay previously miss out on the playoffs in each of the last two seasons before winning the NFC North this season, it’s easier to understand why the Packers decided to fire McCarthy after Week 13 last year.
Looking at the situation with the Giants, Daniel Jones is certainly nowhere near the same level as Rodgers since the rookie just wrapped up his first NFL season, and clearly has plenty of areas in need of improvement.
But with all of the potential surrounding Jones at quarterback along with Saquon Barkley continuing to get better with experience, New York needs a head coach that can help players like these take a step forward instead of backwards.
After watching McCarthy struggle the way he did over the last two years with the Packers before being let go while having Rodgers to work with, the Giants would be foolish not to feel some sort of concern over seeing a similar situation play out.
In a way, the Giants hiring McCarthy would almost seem too similar to the situation with Shurmur in which the team, especially the offense, could be at risk to be held back from their true potential.
Obviously, this would be great news for the Eagles since this would mean one less thing to worry about within the division, but unless the Giants want to see another scenario similar to Shurmur, McCarthy seems like an easy candidate to avoid.
