1. You’ve heard of Peyton Manning, right?

Caldwell served as Tony Dungy‘s assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach from 2002-2008 during his tenure with the Colts. He was instrumental in the development of Peyton Manning. How did that go? The Colts won Super Bowl XLI and were dangerously close to winning another in Super Bowl XLIV, Caldwell’s first season as head coach.

The New Orleans Saints had other plans in his second appearance, but losing in football’s biggest game to future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and one of the greatest coaches of all time, Sean Payton, is nothing to hang your head about.

As of the Championship Round of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, Caldwell is the only the fifth rookie head coach to lead his team to the Super Bowl, and he’s the last one to do so.

He also shares the NFL record for the best start by a rookie head coach (14 straight wins). George Seifert led the San Francisco 49ers to 14 wins as a rookie head coach during his first run in 1989. Those 14 wins also tied a franchise record for Indy.
