Philadelphia Eagles assistant gets promotion, from Detroit: 3 Reactions
Well, this one came out of nowhere. Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach Cory Undlin appears to be getting a promotion, from the Detroit Lions.
Well, here’s a way to start your morning (or spill your morning java on yourself. One of the Philadelphia Eagles assistant coaches is getting a promotion. No, Duce Staley won’t be taking the offensive coordinator position this morning, if he takes it at all.
It appears that defensive backs coach Cory Undlin is set to accept the defensive coordinator position with the Detroit Lions. The news came early on Monday morning from ESPN’s Field Yates. Here are three thoughts following the news.
1. Did he avoid the ax in Philly?
Well, it’s always good to be proactive! This might be the best example of that theory that fans will see all season. Due to lackluster results from Philly’s secondary all season, many speculated that Undlin may not keep his role with the team.
We’ll never know how that will all play itself out now, but it’s good to see Undlin will land on his feet.
2. Where did this insane idea come from?
This one kind of came out of nowhere as there weren’t any official reports that Undlin was seeking a defensive coordinator position. There weren’t any stories of him being a candidate for the Lions. As stated, most of the stories on Philly’s end where Undlin was concerned centered around whether or not he’d even keep his job here.
There’s one major question about this though. If Undlin was struggling to lead a position group, how on Earth is he going to guide an entire defense.
3. The curse continues for Lions fans.
Here’s something of note. Philly could have blocked any interviews between Undlin and another organization, and they apparently chose not to. Also, gauging what his role with the Lions will be might be difficult.
Lions head coach Matt Patricia calls the defensive plays, so maybe Undlin will assist in the game-planning? Who knows, but we all can say this with some confidence. The Lions don’t appear to be any stronger today than they were yesterday.
