John DeFilippo won’t be joining the Philadelphia Eagles after all, and there’s no reason to be upset about that if you’re a fan.

Well, after all of the speculation and theories that were based entirely on nostalgia, we’ve learned that John DeFilippo won’t be returning to the Philadelphia Eagles after all. He’ll instead be heading off to the NFC North to join the Chicago Bears as their quarterbacks’ coach.

You just dodged a bullet if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Ever since Mike Groh‘s firing, the internet’s been littered with theory after theory on why this candidate or that candidate is the easiest transition. Some of you are even upset about DeFilippo’s decision not to come home but don’t be. It’s time something’s verbalized for many of you who are failing to figure something out simply by using the good old fashioned eyeball test.

DeFilippo isn’t an offensive coordinator. He’s an excellent quarterback coach, but he’s not going to succeed in the position of being anyone’s OC. If he could do that job, he wouldn’t have failed at doing that job twice.

The Minnesota Vikings didn’t even see fit to let him finish an entire season, and in his most recent attempt, one with the Jacksonville Jaguars that reunited him with Nick Foles, he did an even worse job than he did the first time.

Sure, Carson Wentz‘s best season came with him being under DeFilippo’s tutelage, but here’s something that will take you far in life once you understand it. All jobs aren’t meant for all people. Some people can’t be head coaches. They’re just really good coordinators (Pat Shurmur and Freddie Kitchens). Some people can’t be coordinators. They’re just really good position coaches.

Count DeFilippo in the latter category. He’s not an OC. He’s a quarterback coach. He’ll do fine in Chicago, and Philadelphia will be fine without him. Mitchell Trubisky will benefit by having him around.
