Philadelphia Eagles rookie report cards: Who’s hot, who’s not so hot
Heading into the 2019 NFL Draft, Eagles vice president and the franchise’s general manager, Howie Roseman, was very specific in stating the thought process was finding guys who would pay huge dividends in the long-term success of the franchise.
That explains the decision to trade up in Round 1 and select the guy that many saw as the second-best offensive tackle in the draft, Andre Dillard of the Washington Cougars.
With Philly’s top spot on the depth chart at left tackle being held down by a future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Jason Peters, Philly knew Dillard could spend some time sitting behind a legend and learning the tricks of the trade.
Still, having a young guy with Dillard’s skill set forced Philly’s coaches to invent ways to use him, so they threw him in as a third tight end in goal-line running sets, and as you might imagine, when Jason Peters got hurt, ’77’ filled in at his natural position.
The only thing he didn’t do well was standing in at right tackle when the ‘Birds’ lost Lane Johnson to an injury. Grade: A- (Pass)
