Could Philadelphia Eagles lose executive to Browns but gain a coach?
The Philadelphia Eagles historically have gotten fat at the Browns expense, but might Cleveland take a page from Philly’s book?
You’ve heard the stories so much that you can probably tell them to someone else like you were there. Once upon a time, in the 1999 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns ignored Donovan McNabb and took Tim Couch. The Philadelphia Eagles took Donovan McNabb with the very next selection.
Fast forward to 2016, and the Browns have a shot at Carson Wentz. The Eagles convince Cleveland to trade that pick to them, and Philly finagles their way into the second-overall selection, and they wind up with ’11’.
Philly’s historically gotten rich at the Browns’ expense. Just last season, the Eagles traded a 2021 draft pick to the Browns in exchange for Genard Avery, a move many believe will pay off in the long run. Yeah, there was that time that the Browns wound up with Joe Banner, but that never really panned out for them.
It seems the Browns are now taking a page out of the Eagles book. It was reported after Eagles denied the Carolina Panthers the opportunity to interview their vice president of football operations, Andrew Berry, that he was considered for the Browns general manager position (Carolina has since expressed the interest in interviewing him for the same role).
Now, a report by Mary Kay Cabot circulated on January 21st that the Browns had interviewed Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton on Saturday for their GM job and would meet with them for a second time this week, but nothing’s set in stone as far as who they might hire.
That means, so far, nothing’s happened in the way of Berry leaving, but if he did, that would be a huge win for Cleveland and a loss for Philly. The story doesn’t end there though. It gets better. It appears that the ‘Birds’ might still be of the mindset of utilizing a plan that has always worked, robbing the Browns’ cupboard.
According to a report by ESPN’s Jason La Canfora, the Eagles may be interested in interviewing Browns defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker, and though it doesn’t specify the job that he’s interviewing for in La Canfora’s report, the assumption is that he’d be sliding into Philly’s vacant defensive backs coaching position. Philly relieved Cory Undlin of his command earlier in January.
Might Philly stick it to the Browns again. If Walker was to wind up in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’, the answer to that would unquestionably have to be ‘yes’.
