Philadelphia Eagles won’t hire an offensive coordinator: 3 Reactions
News broke on the day following the anniversary of the Philadelphia Eagles’ first Super Bowl win that the ‘Birds’ have added two names to their offensive staff.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have some movement, but you may not like any of it. On February 4th, the Philadelphia Eagles fan base took to social media to share a few posts in celebration of the not so distant past. Tuesday marked the two year anniversary of their first-ever Super Bowl win.
One day later, everyone’s discussing the future as news broke stating the Eagles have added to names to their offensive staff. According to multiple sources, including a report by Tom Pelissero and a corresponding story that was written by Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice, the ‘Birds’ have promoted former quarterbacks coach Press Taylor to the role of passing game coordinator.
Tim McManus, a contributor for 97.5 The Fanatic in Philly added to the excitement as he reported several moments later that sources have told him “Former (Denver) Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello and former Mississippi State (Bulldogs) pass game coordinator (and) quarterbacks coach Andrew Breiner are also expected to have a role”.
Some of you are probably asking yourselves what that means for the vacancy at offensive coordinator. Well, according to Jeff McLane, they may not hire one. He states the following:
"The #Eagles will not hire an offensive coordinator, per se, to replace Mike Groh, an NFL source said. Will have a structure with run-pass coordinators and offensive coaches with other titles."
What? That sound you just heard was the collective ‘gulp’ around the Eagles fan base. Does this team have any idea about what it’s doing? Here are three immediate reactions.
1. The idea of hiring a coaching ‘retread’ isn’t an exciting one or anyone.
Call it a crazy theory if you will, but with the situation that the Eagles are in, the idea of adding Scangarello, a guy who was hired to be the Broncos’ offensive coordinator on January 16th of 2019, and fired little less than 365 days later (January 12th of 2020 to be exact) isn’t very exciting.
2. Who is Andrew Breiner?
Breiner is a very recognizable name if you love college football. The 2020 season marks his 15th season as a coach. but the names of some of his stops (Lock Haven, Alleghany, Connecticut, and Fordham) aren’t going to make anyone throw a party. We’ll have to wait and see what his role is.
3. Philly’s coaching search gets more cloudy.
We still don’t know who the wide receivers coach, the defensive backs coach, or the defensive line coaches are. Everyone has their hunches, but we expect real answers by week’s end. It also appears that, now, the coaching search needs to involve someone to take over for Taylor as Philly’s mentor to Carson Wentz.
We should all hope that this is a joke and Philly will hire a real OC as well. Keep an eye on all of this. The finish line seems to be further away than it was a few hours ago.
