3 Darkhorse backup options for Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz
Hey guys. Stop laughing. At least hear this one out. Then, you can laugh. Can any of us argue against the fact that it takes a ton of talent to throw 30 touchdowns in this great game? It’s just those 30 interceptions that make you want to rip your insides out.
Jameis Winston now holds the unenviable honor of accomplishing both of those feats in the same season, and then there’s the other component. If Bruce Arians can’t help you, it may be time to do something else as far as career choices go.
All hope isn’t lost though. Winston has now had his Lasik surgery. He’s stated that his vision has improved, and if someone can get him out of the bad habits that lead to so many bad plays (the 30th interception was his final pass of the season and a pick-six), we may have something here.
The next step in Winston’s football journey is a difficult one to determine, but we know he has talent. The resume is uncanny. He was a USA Today High School All-American in 2011 before being named a Consensus All-American, the ACC Rookie of the Year, the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year and the ACC’s Player of the Year in 2013.
That same season, he was named the Sporting News College Player of the Year, the AP College Player of the Year, and the winner of the Davey O’Brien Award, the Manning Award, the Walter Camp Award, and the Heisman Trophy.
He led the Florida State Seminoles to the BCS National Championship and won it before being the first-overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft and setting the league on fire by making the Pro Bowl and being named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie Team and being named the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year.
Football is a ‘what have you done for me lately’ league though, and despite throwing for 19,737 yards and 121 touchdowns in his five-year career, Winston hasn’t done much outside of leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 28-42 record with him under center.
He did, however, lead the league in passing yards this past season with 5,109. See? He does have the talent and something left! It’s hard to ignore that he is capable. Maybe Winston gets another starting gig. Maybe he doesn’t, but if the latter holds, would it hurt to get him into Philly for a look? Despite his flaws, we all know one thing. He’s better than Nate Sudfeld. Again, what’s the alternative? Taysom Hill, Matt Moore, Chase Daniel, and Case Keenum? Think about it.
