Philadelphia Eagles: 3-Round 2020 NFL Mock Draft pre-combine edition
Unfortunately, the Eagles should expect most of the top cornerbacks to be off the board by the time they are on the clock again in the second round at No. 53 if they choose to go wideout right away.
However, just because there may not be valuable cornerbacks available doesn’t mean the team can’t still bolster their secondary.
That’s where Antoine Winfield Jr. comes in.
Winfield Jr. is most famously known for being the son of former Minnesota Vikings defensive back Antoine Winfield Sr., but it shouldn’t be forgotten that Winfield Jr. had himself a year for the Minnesota Golden Gophers this season.
During his final season with the Gophers in 2019, the safety accumulated 62 solo tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and seven interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
For obvious reasons, this is the kind of production the Eagles would love to have available to them.
Although good in both zone and man coverage, Winfield lacks deep range skills and won’t translate as a traditional free safety at the professional level.
However, Winfield’s versatility is what will entice the Eagles the most. He can line up as a strong safety, nickel corner, or in the box where his ball skills and toughness will shine.
Winfield is also a solid return man on special teams, meaning Philadelphia could use him in multiple ways if needed.
Sooner or later, the Eagles will need to find a natural heir to Malcolm Jenkins, and there are plenty of reasons to believe that Winfield could be a solid candidate at No. 53 if available.
