3. As always, things generally come down to money.

If Jones, is in the cards, it won’t be inexpensive. Two things are working against the ‘Birds’ in terms of negotiating tools. One, they won’t be the only interested team, and second, the proverbial ball is actually in Jones’ court.

In other words, every one of us can expect for there to be some overpayment if the ‘Birds’ or anyone else wants to land what will be one of the biggest fish in the pool we call the free agency period. They don’t call it a ‘frenzy’ for no reason.

In Caplan’s mind, anyone hoping to wind up with Jones could be looking at paying him something in the area of $17 million per season.

Ouch. Fortunately, the Eagles enter this offseason with the most wiggle room they’ve had since Howie Roseman and Doug Pederson have been a team and making personnel decisions.

Philadelphia is expected, once compensatory picks are factored in, to have around ten draft selections and somewhere around $40 million to spend on contracts.

Jones is a very real possibility for a team that desperately needs someone with elite talent at the position. Once upon a time, Philly drafted Nelson Agholor when Byron Jones was still on the board and available. Many saw that as a mistake immediately. Years later, Philly has what most people and teams never get a chance at having, an opportunity to correct past wrongs. Will they capitalize on the opportunity? Time will soon tell. In the meantime, you can bet your last dollar that ‘Birds’ fans will be watching this closely.
