As we move through the first week of the NFL’s new year, Philadelphia Eagles fans are thinking about the possibility of adding Yannick Ngakoue.

No, you’re not alone in what you’re thinking. It’s ridiculous to believe a team can continue to miss on their draft picks and build a consistent winner by wagering future selections to land what we so often call “proven talent”. Philadelphia Eagles fans know that better than anyone.

Recently, much has been made of Philly’s high number of misses in some of the more recent selection meetings. What’s sad is they’ve had to rely on the free agency period because so many guys that they’ve invested draft picks on just aren’t working out. Then, there’s another issue. The veterans that they’re writing big checks to acquire just keep getting injured. Expensive free agents get old quickly.

The trade that landed Darius Slay has excited the fan base, but it’s also caused some concern because it’s the same old story. There isn’t a ton of faith in Cre’Von LeBlanc, Sidney Jones, or Avonte Maddox as starters, so again, Philly’s forced with the theory of giving up draft picks for someone that can help them win right now.

That isn’t a bad idea for any NFL team if you get a sure thing. It just can’t be a team’s lone method of roster construction, and lately, that’s what we’ve seen from the ‘Birds’. Philly’s championship window can close at any time, and while they figure out how to balance the draft and free agency, they can’t ignore elite talent on either end of the spectrum.

Recently, thanks to reports by CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, rumors have linked them to Yannick Ngakoue despite the fact that the Jacksonville Jaguars just used the franchise tag on him. Oh, and there was the thing with Ngakoue posting a photo of Reggie White on his Instagram story (94 WIP-FM’s jack Fritz was among several notable personalities that shared the photo). Might he be a key piece to elevating Philly into a championship contender? Here’s an argument for an against Philly adding him to the nest.
