Eagles debate table: Should Howie Roseman be on a hot seat?
You can’t tell the story of the Eagles without bringing Howie up.
For everything that Chip Kelly did wrong, he did a few things right. He drafted Lane Johnson. He’s the reason Zach Ertz is here, but he also traded LeSean McCoy for Kiko Alonso and shipped off several key contributors who were still in their prime like DeSean Jackson.
All of that pales when we remember that Kelly also buried Howie Roseman in the equipment room. Howie took his lumps, and as Jason Kelce put it in the most famous speech in the history of victory parades, Howie emerged from that set back as a different and changed man.
2016 came and with a new title, executive vice president of football operations, Roseman went to work, signing two receivers when it seemed like there wasn’t enough money to sign either one of them (Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery), finagling the Eagles’ way into the second-overall selection to draft their franchise quarterback, Carson Wentz, and crafting a Super Bowl-winning roster. It seemed as though the job was easy when we watched him do it. He made juggling the salary cap look easy.
Roseman deserves respect because he’s an Eagle through and through. This isn’t one of those mercenaries that we call general managers. This is a guy that genuinely loves his team and loves what he does.
He cares about the city he works in. He cares about his players, sometimes too much. Regardless, more often than not, Howie gets the job done. His job is to evaluate the resources that Philly has at its disposal, balance what’s currently needed with what the Eagles must do to guarantee the future isn’t wagered away, and try and land the best pieces available to ensure the Eagles have one of the best rosters in the NFL.
Now, ask yourselves a question. Is there anyone that does that job better than Howie Roseman?
