Grades for every Philadelphia Eagles safety drafted since 2010
Whenever a team takes a guy in the fifth round of any draft, you just kind of cross your fingers and hope that he turns out to be someone special. Philadelphia selected Nathan Gerry 184th overall in 2017, and from what we’ve all seen so far, it looks as though that’s going to turn out to be a great decision.
Like Mills, Gerry entered the world of college athletics as a defensive back. The Nebraska Cornhuskers saw fit to let him settle in as a safety as a junior. 273 total tackles, two sacks, and 13 interceptions in 48 games landed him on the Eagles radar. Like Mills, Philly used a late-round selection on the “White Snake” knowing they’d move him to another position.
Like Mills, Gerry’s been better than advertised.
Gerry would become a linebacker, and that decision has proven to be a wise one. The skills that made him a star at the collegiate level translated nicely, and now, 106 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three picks later, it appears that the Eagles have one of the key pieces for a bright future in this guy. It’s going to be nice to see him in an Eagles jersey for years to come. Grade: B+
