3 Reasons Philadelphia Eagles can’t entertain adding Cam Newton
1. He’s deteriorated physically.
Following the 2017 season, Newton was voted by his peers onto the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018 as he landed in the 25th spot. The theory was he’d ride that wave into 2018 and that season would be one of his best. Things didn’t quite turn out that way.
Newton completed 68 percent of his passes that season, a personal best, but no one noticed. Instead, the talk was about Carolina’s 6-8 win-loss total with him under center.
Newton often seemed to be a step slower than he was in previous seasons. The velocity on his throws decreased, and in big moments of even bigger games, he failed to deliver when he needed to the most. He threw 24 touchdowns. That tied the second-highest total of his career, but he also threw 13 interceptions.
He sat the final two games of the regular season and eventually underwent shoulder surgery on January 24th of 2019. He was injured again during 2019’s preseason but played in the first two regular-season games. He was held out of the third thanks to a Lisfranc fracture.
Carolina held out hope that he would return but eventually placed him on their injured reserve in November. That ended his season. This past offseason, he was given permission to seek a trade. His agent was unable to find an agreeable partner. He was released by Carolina after nine seasons, and here we are asking if it’s his recent injury history, an attitude that’s often been labeled as “selfish”, or the fact that he may only be interested in a starter’s role that has hampered him from finding a new home.
Then again, it could be all of those things.
