Philadelphia Eagles: 10 best free-agent signings in team history
How about a little controversy? If some of you were to create your list, Asante Samuel wouldn’t be on it. Some of you, if given the same liberty, might place him higher. He wasn’t much of a tackler or a big hitter, but Samuel did exactly what the Eagles organization brought him to the “City of Brotherly Love” to do.
He forced turnovers, and he created additional opportunities for the Eagles offense to go out and do work.
Philadelphia threw their rod in the free-agency pool during 2008’s offseason, and they snagged one of the biggest fish. The highly-coveted Samuel was added to the Eagles’ nest thanks to a six-year deal in which both parties agreed that he would be making $56 million over that stretch.
If only there was a cash register sound effect that we could insert right here.
Samuel appeared in 61 games, including the playoffs, and he tallied 145 total tackles, two forced fumbles, 68 pass breakups, 25 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. Regardless of where Samuel ranks in your hearts and imaginations, one thing is certain. It sure would be nice if he was on this team right now.
Three of his four Pro Bowl appearances were earned while he was in an Eagles jersey.
