Would the Philadelphia Eagles consider the possibility of adding Joe Flacco to compete for the backup quarterback job with Nate Sudfeld?
Even though the main focus surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles at the moment is on the upcoming draft, another popular topic of discussion has been whether the team should consider signing Joe Flacco to add depth at the quarterback position.
Despite the Eagles agreeing to bring Nate Sudfeld back this offseason on a one-year deal to be the backup for Carson Wentz, this doesn’t necessarily guarantee he will own the No. 2 job come training camp, especially if someone like Flacco provides some extra competition.
Last August, Sudfeld appeared to be on his way to being the official backup behind Wentz before a broken wrist forced Philadelphia to convince veteran Josh McCown to come out of retirement.
Due to McCown’s experience, Sudfeld dropped to the No. 3 quarterback on the roster once he was healthy enough to return, and while the Eagles haven’t exactly expressed any desire to bring on another veteran for some competition, it appears Flacco would still love the opportunity.
During a recent interview, Flacco, who grew up close to Philadelphia before attending Delaware for college, made it pretty clear that he would be open to possibly playing for the Eagles if the opportunity were to present itself.
When taking into consideration the idea of Flacco having the opportunity to play for the team his friends already love from living in the area all those years, it’s easy to understand why the former Super Bowl MVP would love the chance to compete for a roster spot in Philadelphia.
But of course, the argument can also made made there’s a reason why Flacco is still in search of a home with the draft right around the corner since the veteran is not only up there in age (35), but is also coming off a disappointing year with the Denver Broncos.
Since the Eagles could use another experienced veteran on the depth chart at quarterback, the addition of Flacco at the right price wouldn’t exactly be the worst idea in the world, especially if it helped provide extra motivation on Sudfeld’s end.
Plus, for all Philadelphia knows, with the excitement Flacco seems to be showing over the thought of possibly joining the Eagles, maybe a fresh start near his home town would help the veteran bounce back strong after a disappointing 2019 campaign.
