Philadelphia Eagles reunion with LeSean McCoy would prove trivial

LeSean McCoy has made it no secret he would love a reunion with the Philadelphia Eagles, but it’s an avenue the defending NFC East champions shouldn’t flirt with.

Ian Rapaport had LeSean McCoy on his podcast RapSheet + Friends and Rapaport asked the veteran running back if he thinks about ever playing with the Philadelphia Eagles again.

Ever since McCoy finally won his first Super Bowl as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs a few months ago, there has been plenty of speculation over where he could end up for the 2020 season.

After listening to McCoy’s interview with Rapaport, it’s pretty clear the former Pittsburgh star would love the chance to return to Philadelphia for a second stint, as indicated below.

"Listen, it’s not a secret, everybody knows its a special place for me there, when I was playing with the Eagles. They changed my life for the better. A lot of my best friends are still there. I just talked to Fletcher Cox yesterday, just texting him and messing around. It would mean a lot to me to play back there. If I could finish out my career there, that would be excellent."

It’s easy to romanticize the thought of No. 25 carrying the rock in midnight green once again, but a McCoy return would go against the Eagles offseason blueprint.

Howie Roseman expressed at his end of year press conference this past season the importance of Philadelphia focusing on youth moving forward after seeing some of the injuries from 2019.

Unfortunately, Philadelphia’s roster was one of the oldest in 2019, and experience clearly doesn’t equate to wins. Come the 2020 season, the Eagles must find a way to get younger.

Shady will turn 32 before the season even starts and his best days are undoubtedly behind him. Whether McCoy wants to hear it or not, the veteran just doesn’t fit into the goal Roseman set out to accomplish this offseason.

Miles Sanders, who will be 23 come September kickoff, will carry the load for the Eagles in 2020 as the top running back. Boston Scott, who will soon turn 25, is expected to be the change of pace back in 2020.

It’s unclear who the third or fourth running back will be behind Sanders and Scott, but nonetheless, whoever it may be will undoubtedly have fresher legs than McCoy.

Week 15 against the Denver Broncos was McCoy’s final game with the Chiefs, in which he carried the ball six times for just 16 yards. After that game, Andy Reid gave McCoy one snap the rest of the season, which seemed to be a strong indication by Reid that Shady is no longer a coveted weapon.

The Eagles have had plenty of opportunities to correct Chip Kelly’s egregious mistake of trading McCoy in 2015, but the present day is far too late to do so.

“I really want to play two more years,” McCoy said in an interview with SiriusXM on April 10. “My body feels fine.”

If Shady gets his way and does play two more seasons, maybe Roseman can swing a trade deadline acquisition two years down the road for a farewell tour.

McCoy will always be a highly beloved Philly athlete and one of the greatest Eagles running backs of all time, but for now, the Eagles should allow another team to consider bringing him on board for 2020, and focus on adding someone younger.
