4. Mo’ veterans, mo’ problems
You haven’t forgotten about defensive tackle Malik Jackson, have you? Thanks to a season-ending injury in Week 1 of 2019’s campaign, we didn’t see much of him in his first year with the “Birds”. Don’t be surprised if you hear chatter that his deal was a mistake.
Jackson only represents a $4.6 million cap hit in 2020, but in 2021, that number goes through the roof. Try $13.6 million on for size. Jackson’s contract is another that will have people questioning Roseman’s judgment. The team can only recoup $1 million if they cut Jackson before June 1st of 2021. It’s a weird situation with Jackson, but don’t be surprised if this season is the veteran’s last year in Philly.
Then, there’s the beloved DeSean Jackson. He’s one of the Eagles’ highest-paid players and his cap hit increases by $2 million from 2020 to 2021, but that isn’t the issue. His availability is the issue. He’s coming off of a significant injury and surgery, so we can’t determine how much of a factor he’ll be.
The team’s counting on Jackson to be one of their leading receivers in 2020, but the team drafted three speedsters for a reason. They expect Jalen Reagor to be the downfield threat for years to come, and if they can get John Hightower or Quez Watkins to contribute for some solid play, an aging Jackson could be out of the door. Don’t be surprised if 2020 is Jackson’s final year in midnight green. That brings us to another fan favorite.
