6. Trust the man in charge
Look, whether you want to admit this or not, Roseman is steering the ship for a reason. He’s going to get the team under the cap, and there’s no need to panic. This is how the league works.
Roseman has shown that he can build a Super Bowl roster, and he’s put together teams that have allowed the Eagles to make the NFL postseason following each of the last three regular seasons. With Jeffrey Lurie and Doug Pederson both involved, this franchise is going to find a way to stay consistent.
Just because the Eagles have a lot of money tied up into aging players doesn’t mean the team will unravel after the 2020 season. Yes, there are cap issues, but this isn’t unprecedented, and Roseman knows what he’s doing.
He began the process of healing things as he allowed Malcolm Jenkins to walk and rejoin the Saints. Nigel Bradham is also gone, and for the moment, at the time of this story being published, so is Jason Peters (we’ll have to wait and see how that one goes. Roseman has tougher decisions to make in the future, but he’ll find a way to keep the Eagles above water.
Of course, the Eagles are in win-now mode heading into 2020 as they will be in 2021. Philadelphia is a win-now city. If this team wants to be an elite franchise, they have to push all their chips to the middle of the table year in and year out.
Cap issues aren’t to be ignored, and you can always see them coming. Still, as long as Philly holds on to the top-of-the-line people they’ve placed at quarterback, head coach, and general manager, this team is going to find a way to win. Keep in mind the fact that they have one of the best owners in all of the professional sports as well.
Philly isn’t comfortably under the cap right now by accident. They do a great job of adjusting, and there’s no reason to believe that they won’t do the same in 2021.
