3. Philadelphia Eagles refuse to hire a real offensive coordinator.

Make no mistake. Eagles fans are lucky. They have one heck of a coach in Doug Pederson. They have one of the game’s best defensive coordinators and general managers in Jim Schwartz and Howie Roseman respectively. They have one of the NFL’s smartest and forward-thinking owners in Jeffrey Lurie.

That doesn’t mean this team is perfect. That doesn’t mean they do everything correctly. Sometimes, they overthink themselves or don’t think about things enough.

Heading into the 2020 offseason, the Eagles didn’t just need wide receivers. They needed coaches. To their credit, they made some nice hires. Aaron Moorehead is the best wide receivers coach this team has had during the Doug Pederson era, and Marquand Manuel will do some nice things with this Eagles secondary.

Then, it happened. Philly, as they sometimes do, overthought things (or didn’t think about things enough, depending on how you look at it). With guys like Jim Caldwell available, the Eagles eschewed traditional thinking and decided they’d, instead, walk into 2020 without an offensive coordinator.

They, instead, went with a senior offensive consultant, Marty Mornhinweg, and a senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello, two guys with very different ways of thinking. Coach Pederson will continue to call plays, but even though there’s no real way to prove this, somehow, this seems like a bad idea.

Teams hire offensive coordinators because it works. Remember Frank Reich? Call it a hunch, but this sort of feels like it has “disaster” written all over it.
